Run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe). To do this, follow these steps:
  • Open an administrative Command Prompt window.
  • At the command prompt, type sfc /scannow, and then press Enter.
  • If it reports all files in order proceed to 5
  • If it reports files have been repaired run again please, after reboot - run three times please if necessary until it reports all in order
  • After the scan is finished, reboot, try to install updates again.

Didn't record any files being repaired after completion of scan. Same result, didn't install updates.

Delete all contents of the catroot2 folder, but do not delete the catroot2 folder.
Type the following command, and then press Enter: net start cryptsvc<LI>Exit the Command Prompt window.Try again pleaseNOTE Signing off - back as usual 1800

Open the folder and delete the files but NOT the folder
So you double click on the folder, then you click on the files in the folder and on that right click you click delete

If after this they still will not install

try a clean boot please
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

BE CAREFUIL - do NOT proceed beyond the steps highlighted otherwise you will delete all restore points. as per this warning on the link

Following this step lets Microsoft services continue to run. These services include Networking, Plug and Play, Event Logging, Error Reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you may permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use the System Restore utility together with existing restore points.

I was able to delete the contents of the catroot2 folder. No change. Next, performed a clean boot as instructed. Again, no success.

CompCav contacted me as per your suggestion to see if malware/virus could be the cause of my problem. After running a few scans, he didn't find anything on his end. He also told me to tell you that this is a refurbished laptop with windows.old and windows.old.000 files on the hard drive. I also will send a Belarc report on this machine. Hopefully, it will give you more info to help diagnose my problem.

I cannot believe it is anything to do with the upgrade of the system from Vista to Windows 7.
If that was the case, then I am sure more update problems would have been encountered as the system was ugraded in February and many updates have installed since then.

On IE click help and then click about IE - is that the 64 bit version, as by default, IE9 runs in 32 bit, as ActiveX, etc are also 32 bit even although you have a 64 bit OS
You can configure IE9 in 64 bit as the default IE9 and if you have done so that may be the cuase of the problems.

Try using the 32 bit version of IE and then try the updates again
For Internet Explorer look at Tools, About. The 64-bit version shows "64-bit Edition" on the about screen.

You can choose which one to start in the Programs menu. "Internet Explorer" starts the 32bit version, while "Internet Explorer (64-bit") starts the 64-bit version. Generally, the 32bit version is the preferred version, the default browser and the one you should use.

I have to admit that I am beginning to run out of ideas.
I only have four possible solutions left

1. Control Panel. Troubleshooter, Ssystem and security, Fix problem - Windows update
Run to whatever stage is required please.

1. Am I correct in thinking that windows 7 was installed with SP1, rather tthan SP1 being downloaded as the servcie pack from updates and do you have the dvd

2. Would you please run a chkdsk / r on C drive
you may either use the GUI on Computer and right click the drive clickl properties, tools, error checking and click to check both boxes and then start
OR you may open a cmd prompt wioth admin rights and at the prompt type
chkdsk C: /r

When it is complete please go event viewer, windows logs, application and when that loads, on the right hand pane FIND, type chkdsk. - the results are under the wininit entries.
Check please that those are the results from THIS chkdsk and then see if errors were found other than the normal minor inconsistencies, particularly any bad sectors.

1. SP1 was installed through Windows Update earlier this month. No, I do not have the recovery/reinstallation disk.

2. Doesn't look bad.
