Hello
I am back with you.

Thanks to my colleagues for looking at it for me whilst I was working long hours.
Thanks to you as well for your patience.

I notice that you have CCleaner installed, do you use the registry cleaning function, if so and you use that on a regular basis, then if you have backed up the registry before using CCleaner ON THE DATE, when this problem began, restore the registry to that date.

If you can identify a particular date, for the problem, and you do not have the registry backup, then try a system restore if you have that date available.
On windows 7 when you go to system restore it will show the most recent restore points, click on the SHOW MORE RESTORE POINTS, then when you have those dates, select one and then click on Scan for affected programs - that will show you what will be not available after the system restore.

Of course any personal data will also be unavailable, insofar as what has been added or ameded since that date, so ensure you backup before.

CCleaner is an excellent program, but the use of the registry cleaner without precautions of backing up the registry is most unadvisable.
There are many people who opine that CCleaner is perfectly safe including its registry cleaner, I DO NOT AGREE.
IMHO the use of a registry cleaner, especially on Windows 7 is unnecessary and completely inadvisable.

IF that does not work, if you are in a postion to try, then like my colleagues, I am beginnning to think that the only answer is going to be a `repair` install.

However let me know if yoju can try this system restore or regsitry restore first .

ALSO what anti-virus did you have before MSE please and whilst Seven was installed.

System Restore only goes back for a few days even with the "show more restore points" box checked. I am running system restore nonetheless because I don't have anything to lose since nothing else has worked. I went to the earliest point possible which was June 25 of this year. The computer has been running for awhile, but I just wanted to let you know what I was doing. I will post again when the computer is done with the restore and I can run the updates.

The computer runs well even though it won't install updates. My thinking now is to just continue using it as is. Once it becomes unusable, I can perform a clean install. What is your thought on that?

I have used the registry cleaner on Ccleaner only once on this machine. I can't remember if the problem started after that point or not. I use the Ccleaner registry cleaner on my other machines without any problems.

Norton was the antivirus software till I put MSE on it.

System Restore is finished but my computer still won't install updates.

How can it be June 25 we are not there yet

Presuming that was a typo - JUNE and as you had Norton did you run the norton removal tool, if not and norton was installed on windows7 that MAY be the problem

It will not run in safe mode. I guess I will try it in the normal mode.

Won't install in regular mode either.

With that web page for the download open
On IE go tools, internet options, security, Trusted sites
click the sites button
is microsoft.com on the list of trusted sites
If not left click once on the address bar, right click and paste to the top box - then add to list.
exit from there and on the trsuted sites now reduce security to minimum.

exit from there
and try again please

Well I am sorry to say that I cannot solve it.
A couple of my colleagues have had a look and they cannot see anything, other than what has been done.
As some of the updates are security updates you are entitled to free help from Microsoft on this problem, but I doubt if they will come up with anything other than we have tried, but perhaps you may wish to consider that approach.
If you see Support on this link it will explain how to obtain free technical support for security updates
http://technet.micro...lletin/MS09-032

My last suggestion would be to uninstall the Panda USB Vacine, the Team Viewer and the Roboform software, if of course you have the means to reinstall if they are the purchased editions.

There is just a slight chance I think that one of these may be the cause.
The possibility is only sluight, but anything is worth a go at this stage.
