Hi SleepyDude,

So, ESET was able to find my password for me and I uninstalled the antivirus. I was only able to to get limited access to the Internet when I connected my laptop with the Ethernet cable (unable to actually open up the browser, page couldn't be displayed like last time).

Should I reinstall ESET or did you want me to keep it off for a while longer?

Hi,

Did you run also the ESETUninstaller available on the ESET website (post #68)?

Oh, oops! I completely forgot about that, I saved it on my USB and everything! I'll run that, try the Internet again and let you know.😀

Hi SleepyDude,

I ran the Uninstaller and connected my computer to the router; I wasn't able to open the browser, but my computer recognized our home network which it hadn't been able to do!

Hi,

Looking better :)

Do you have another working computer connected to the same router?

Please run MiniToolBox on the other computer only with the option List IP Configuration and post the log.

Good News! :)

I connected another laptop to the router and ran MiniToolBox (I ran it off of my USB, let me know if you need me to put it on the desktop). Here's the log!

Hi,

From the log it seems the second machine can't also access the internet!
Can you confirm that?

If you have a computer working that is connected to the same router by wireless or cable please run MinitoolBox so I check for differences on the configuration.

Hi SleepyDude,

Sorry about that! It does get Internet it's just that I didn't even think about connecting it since we really only use that laptop for PowerPoint presentations at our church (it's not usually online because it doesn't have antivirus software). But I ran MiniToolBox on my parents' PC, which is connected wirelessly to router; let me know if this one works or if I need to connect it to the router physically and I'll figure something out!

Here's the log:

No problem. The router is given DNS timed out! Please turn off the router and wait about 10 seconds then turn it on, wait for about 5 minutes or so until the router reestablish the connection to the internet.

Keep the computer connected using the Ehternet cable and let's reapply one fix we did before now that Windows seems better...

Run OTL Fix

  • Right click on the icon Posted Image and choose Run as Administrator to execute the tool. Make sure all other windows are closed.
Do not change any other settings unless otherwise told to do so.
  • Under the Posted Image box at the bottom, paste in the following:
    :Commands
    [CreateRestorePoint]

    :Files
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt /c
    netsh winsock reset /c
    ipconfig /release /c
    ipconfig /flushdns /c
    ipconfig /renew /c

  • click the Posted Image button at the top. Let the program run uninterrupted.
  • click OK
Notes:
  • When OTL executes the Fix it can shutdown all running processes and you may lose the Desktop and icons, but they will return on reboot
  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please accept right away.
  • The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot. Copy & Paste that report in your next reply and not as attachment.
  • The OTL fix log will be saved in the following location: C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log - where mmddyyy _hhmmss is the date and time when the fix run.

Minitoolbox
  • Close all the programs and run MiniToolBox
    Posted Image
  • Check the following options:
    • List IP Configuration
    • List Winsock Entries
    • List last 10 Event Viewer log
    • List Devices: Only Problems
  • Click on Go.
  • Post the resulting log in your next reply.

Things I would like to see in your next reply:
  • The OTL Fix log
  • The MiniToolBox log Result.txt

Hi,

I would like to try with google DNS and see if it works or not...

  • Click the Start button Posted Image and in the search box, type view network, in the list of results click View Network Connections.
  • Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:
    • To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  • Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click Properties.
  • Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
  • Click OK.
  • Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server remove them.
  • On the Preferred DNS server type the IP address of the Google DNS server: 8.8.8.8
  • Click OK on both windows.

Restart the computer and then run MinitoolBox again, this time only with the option List IP Configuration.

It didn't work

On the last logs there is an error related to the wireless card, let's resolve that...

- Open the Device Manager like you did before, expand the Network Adapters, right click on the wireless card Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and click Uninstall. On the confirmation Window check the option Delete the driver software for this device.

- Reinstall the driver for the Wireless card using the file you download from the Dell website.
- Restart the computer
- Try to connect to your wireless network, most likely you will be prompted for the password do access.
- generate a MinitoolBox log with the same settings but this time connected by Wireless only.
