I have a new laptop that came with 64 bit Windows 8.1.  I've set the BIOS to allow for virtualization and I've looked for the hyper-v in the Window's features, but it is not there.  Is Windows Server 2012 R2 required to use the hyper-v feature or do I need a different version of Windows 8.1?

I've used Virtualbox on this laptop, so I know that the virtualization works, but where is the hyper-v?  I removed the Virtualbox in case that there may be a virtual conflict.

I believe you need Pro or Ultimate for Hyper-V.

How about this:     Client Hyper-V

Hyper-V requires a computer with a supported 64-bit processor that has Second Level Address Translation (SLAT). For information about checking and changing the virtualization support settings of your system BIOS, consult your system manufacturer.

4 GB of RAM is required.

Hyper-V is only available in the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows 8 Pro 64-bit Edition

  • Windows 8 Enterprise 64-bit Edition

  • Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit Edition

  • Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit Edition
