Hi Phill,

Don’t worry about how long it takes to get back to me. Your the one helping me and we all have other things to do. I’m not familiar with this software, will I run the short drive test and then fix all fast if it finds anything? Or does it give you a log that I can attach?

Thanks

Hi Scott,

Thanks  :)

Please run the short and then the long generic tests first, if the drive fails either one of the tests a new HDD will be required.

Hello Scott,

That is weird, a loose internal connection perhaps, is the notebook still under warranty, the specs that I get suggest that it may not be that old.

Please run the long test if only to confirm that the drive fails both tests or not, I always like to have a second opinion.

An SSD is the way to go as they have come right down in price, a 250GB SSD and if needed further down the line invest in an external USB HDD.

Hi phill,

I’ve just started the long test, will post when it fails , that’s the annoying thing about it the warranty ran out 3 weeks ago just before this happened.
I can get a crucial 250gb sdd for about £45, the 1tb one is £117. The bloody laptop only cost £199 when we bought it new..!!

Anyway thanks again for all the help

Hi Scott,

If you have had the computer less than two years you should look into having the drive replaced, see two year EU warranty info here

Crucial CT500MX500SSD1Z 500 GB 2.5 Inch 7 mm MX500 SATA Solid State Drive £58.99 with free P&P from Amazon

You are welcome  :)

Hi Phill,

Ill give it a go at getting it repaired. It was PC World it was bought from, not sure how receptive theyll be? They might try and say it was dropped or our fault it was damaged?
Thats the crucial one I was looking at also but the 250gb one. I suppose for the price the 500 is probably better value.
The long scan hasnt failed yet but it has been sitting on 2.99% with 3:25:43 time left to go for about 40 minutes!

Hi Scott,

Be insistent with them and especially if the notebook is unmarked and has in fact never been dropped or banged, Seagate HDDs are on the avoid list nowadays as their quality and reliability is not what it used to be.

It might be an idea to leave the long test running overnight, even then it may not complete, the HDD testing information will be good to have when it come to dealing with PC World, unless things have changed they don`t have fully qualified instore techs so will need to send the notebook back to their workshops to be checked out, at the end of the day if the notebook just out of the blue failed to boot the notebook is not fit for purpose.

Hi phill,

Just a wee update, the long scan has now been running over 24hrs. It’s moved to 3% but now says it has over 18hrs to run. This has been like this since I checked it this morning and has never moved.

Try to uninstall the windows and re install it. May be your windows license has expired and you haven't renewed it. Therefore please install a genuine windows.

Before posting in another members thread there are at least five important points to consider;

1: You should never post in another members thread looking for help for yourself.
2: Have you read and understood the opening post and thread of the member to which you intend to reply?
3: Has what you intend to suggest already been put forward by another member?
4: Is the guidance that you intend to suggest based on personal knowledge and experience to which you have had success?
5: Posting links to any other tech site or service is only acceptable if beneficial to the member that is being helped and only if the same guidance is not already readily available at Geeks to Go.

Thank you for your understanding.
