I recently bought a VG248QE for super cheap from an associate who upgraded. Thing is, this person is incredibly disgusting and the monitor reflects that. I figured for the price it was worth cleaning it, however I didn't realize how hard the screen itself would be to clean. After inquiring about it I know it's an old, dried mixture of coughed up food/liquid, blood and mucous from sneezes, and years worth of dirt and dust. Internet searching only recommends the standard screen cleaner and microfiber cloth method, but for the most part that just removed some of the dirt and most of the dust. The other caked-on stuff aren't going to come off without some kind of abrasive action.

 

Even though I didn't pay much, I still don't want to risk damaging the screen. But this stuff simply isn't going to come off with a screen cleaner and a cloth. Is there a way to safely scrape the screen, or some kind of special concoction that can safely break down all the grime/food/blood? Thank you for any help you can provide.

Whatever you do, avoid any type of scraping, applying too much pressure on the screen or using anything that is abrasive.

 

Get yourself something like the product here + a roll of either insulation or masking tape.

 

Tape around the edges of the screen and overlap the tape onto the screen surround.

 

Lay the screen flat.

 

Spray the screen with a good amount of the cleaning liquid (Don't overdo it) leave it to soak into the grime but don`t try cleaning it off just yet, apply a second amount of the cleaning liquid, wait a minute or two and then try gently wiping away the grime, repeat however many times it takes to get the screen clean, remove the tape, apply some cleaning liquid to a lint free cloth and gently wipe around the edge of the screen where the tape was.

 

If the above approach does not shift the muck, the screen was not such a bargain I`m afraid.

In addition to what was said above, you can use a papertowel or other such item to keep the cleaner from roaming around. I would let it remain for a fair bit of time. Water dissolves things, but it can take time, so keeping it moist will help. You don't want to soak it so much that it can go places that you don't want it to, which is why using something to retain it can help. It will also help if you can't have the screen perfectly level.

To reiterate what phillpower2 stated "Tape around the edges of the screen and overlap the tape onto the screen surround."

The reason for this is to keep any liquid from seeping past the screen and in to the electronics.
