Hi,

 

My friend has a gaming desktop PC which was working fine one day, then next morning it powers up but no signal on monitor. Checked the obvious, connections etc.

 

If I take the computer to my house (10 minutes drive away) it works fine. So I have his computer, monitor, all his cables, keyboard and mouse. The setup is identical apart from the location and therefore, the electrical supply.

 

In my house it turns on and the monitor comes on, boots into Windows with out a problem.

 

If I take it back to his, I get the same problem - powers up but no signal. I have also tried my monitor at his house and that also does not work. Have tried different cables, different sockets at his house and different rooms.

 

Thought it might have been an electrical issue, as he has had problems in the past with shoddy builders and flooding, but I can't explain why everything powers on ok, and it just isn't getting the signal.

 

I have also checked that the graphics card is securely fitted, and it isn't due to the short drive in my car, jiggling the components!

 

Would be grateful if anyone could suggest anything else for me to try.

Maybe a grounding problem? Either way though, have them call a local Licensed Electrician to make sure everything is as it should be.

The only thing common is power. I would check that the power and especially the ground is proper. Bad grounds will create a host of issues either immediate or after a period of time.

I would have a qualified electrician check it.

Thankyou, yes I just spoke to our cooker repair man this afternoon, and he is convinced it must be a power issue!

 

It's beyond what I'm prepared to do, so we'll get a pro to look at it - thanks!

You can purchase testers you plug in to the wall that will verify proper wiring and grounding. If power is improper then you can get an electrician. The testers are inexpensive. I used it at work all the time before I pulled out my digital meter.

Thank you both for all your assistance. I have looked at the electrical testers on Amazon and they do seem quite straightforward.

 

However, both of us agree that it's time to call on the professionals, so he'll be arranging for an electrician to come and take a look!
