Google CEO Eric Schmidt has set the Internet on fire with his latest speech. During his talk, he touched on privacy concerns of everyday users. Apparently, Google has grown so big that they have forgotten exactly what it was they set out to DO in the first place. Mr. Schmidt claims that only those who have done something wrong – or have something to hide – should ever be concerned about their privacy.

As if we ever doubted the power of Google, they have proven once again why they are the king. On their official blog yesterday, they announced the advent of the new real-time search functionality. When you do any type of search on Google, your results page will immediately update with real-time updates from places such as Twitter, MySpace, Jaiku and more. Whether it’s an eyewitness tweet, a breaking news story or a fresh blog post, you can find it on Google right after it’s published on the web.
On Thursday, it was announced that Comcast will be buying a controlling share of NBC television. Bloggers around the world are speculating as to what this will mean for the future of television – both online and offline. Consumer Right’s groups are protesting to this deal quite loudly. They feel combining Comcast’s power over cable and Internet connections with NBCUs television stations and movie studio will give the conglomerate entirely too much control. Other encampments, meanwhile, applaud this move – hoping that the merger will bring even better programming to already strong NBC.
I was without power for most of the afternoon and evening today. When the power company had everything fixed, the first thing I did was to head over to Twitter to see what I had missed. That’s honestly where I find out most of my news lately. On Twitter, I follow a lot of different people. Many of those are staff members and experts right here on GeeksToGo, as well as other security-related sites.
As soon as my Twitter homepage loaded, I started seeing tweet after tweet talking about Avast, and their horrible “oopsie” today with updates. Being the person I am, I started nosing around the web, trying to find out more. The more I read, the more disturbed and angry I became.

It has recently come to light that Apple is denying some smokers coverage under their AppleCare plans. At least two people have gone on record with copies of emails showing that they were denied service on their Apple computers, solely because they were smokers.
In both cases, Apple cited OSHA standards, claiming that cigarette smoke (and residue) are “health hazards”. Therefore, they refuse to force technicians to work on the machines – even though they are technically covered. Furthermore, Apple claims in both instances that the smoke/tar damage on the inside of the machines voids the Apple warranty. However, there is nothing in the warranty about cigarettes – nor their effects on a machine – whatsoever.
I used to be one of those women who was standing in line at my favorite store at 3am on Black Friday. I was armed with a list, and nothing was going to stand in the way of my obtaining every last item. To be clear, I never shoved anyone or ran my cart into someone. I wasn’t that bad, thank goodness. A few years ago, I watched a child get mowed down by an angry woman. She shoved her cart hard into the back of the little girl, who was apparently in her way. I actually left my cart full of items, and walked out of the store – after making sure the little girl would be ok. I couldn’t do it anymore.
For those of us in the US, Thanksgiving is upon us once again. Like the rest of you, I’ll spend my day going between the kitchen and the television. In the morning, we watch the parades. In the afternoon… it’s football time! During our dinner, we always take turns going around the table and giving each person a turn to talk about things they are thankful for. When my kids were little, I used to laugh inside when they would say how they were thankful for their favorite toys, or a cute boy in school. They’d remember at the end of their list to throw in “oh yeah – and my Mom too!”.
Like anyone else, I’m thankful for my kid and family… my friends… my health… my ability to work. Those are all a given. Let’s have some fun, though, and talk about the Geeky things in life that we are grateful for! We’re human. It’s okay for us to be happy that we have “things”, and to be thankful for them!
More and more frequently, we’ve had forum members and even staff receiving warnings from their antivirus program, from McAfee Site Advisor, or some other source of online protection that Geeks to Go is a dangerous site or contains dangerous links. This is untrue – Geeks to Go is very safe, but we mistakenly get flagged. This is known as a false positive. Why does this happen? There are a few reasons.
Many security suites and protection programs are adding website screening as part of their overall protection, and some browsers also have website blocking built-in to them. I’ve had Firefox block sites on more than one occasion while doing research, and I’m glad when it does. Much of the malware we encounter gets installed as a drive-by download, meaning simply visiting the wrong site can infect your computer. Protecting against these things would seem to be a good thing. However, these programs are often relying on heuristics to identify potentially dangerous downloads, meaning they’re looking at the characteristics of a file to try and determine if it’s dangerous. In addition, there are many different security products available, and they all have different means to characterize potentially dangerous downloads.
