Apple Tells Smokers to Go Away

apple-cigIt has recently come to light that Apple is denying some smokers coverage under their AppleCare plans. At least two people have gone on record with copies of emails showing that they were denied service on their Apple computers, solely because they were smokers.

In both cases, Apple cited OSHA standards, claiming that cigarette smoke (and residue) are “health hazards”. Therefore, they refuse to force technicians to work on the machines – even though they are technically covered. Furthermore, Apple claims in both instances that the smoke/tar damage on the inside of the machines voids the Apple warranty. However, there is nothing in the warranty about cigarettes – nor their effects on a machine – whatsoever.

Forget Black Friday – Hello Cyber Monday!

cartI used to be one of those women who was standing in line at my favorite store at 3am on Black Friday. I was armed with a list, and nothing was going to stand in the way of my obtaining every last item. To be clear, I never shoved anyone or ran my cart into someone. I wasn’t that bad, thank goodness. A few years ago, I watched a child get mowed down by an angry woman. She shoved her cart hard into the back of the little girl, who was apparently in her way. I actually left my cart full of items, and walked out of the store – after making sure the little girl would be ok. I couldn’t do it anymore.

What Geeky Gadgets are You Grateful For?

thankfulFor those of us in the US, Thanksgiving is upon us once again. Like the rest of you, I’ll spend my day going between the kitchen and the television. In the morning, we watch the parades. In the afternoon… it’s football time! During our dinner, we always take turns going around the table and giving each person a turn to talk about things they are thankful for. When my kids were little, I used to laugh inside when they would say how they were thankful for their favorite toys, or a cute boy in school. They’d remember at the end of their list to throw in “oh yeah – and my Mom too!”.

Like anyone else, I’m thankful for my kid and family… my friends… my health… my ability to work. Those are all a given. Let’s have some fun, though, and talk about the Geeky things in life that we are grateful for! We’re human. It’s okay for us to be happy that we have “things”, and to be thankful for them!

False positives – why Geeks to Go gets flagged as dangerous

warningMore and more frequently, we’ve had forum members and even staff receiving warnings from their antivirus program, from McAfee Site Advisor, or some other source of online protection that Geeks to Go is a dangerous site or contains dangerous links.  This is untrue – Geeks to Go is very safe, but we mistakenly get flagged.  This is known as a false positive.  Why does this happen?  There are a few reasons.

Many security suites and protection programs are adding website screening as part of their overall protection, and some browsers also have website blocking built-in to them.  I’ve had Firefox block sites on more than one occasion while doing research, and I’m glad when it does.  Much of the malware we encounter gets installed as a drive-by download, meaning simply visiting the wrong site can infect your computer.  Protecting against these things would seem to be a good thing.  However, these programs are often relying on heuristics to identify potentially dangerous downloads, meaning they’re looking at the characteristics of a file to try and determine if it’s dangerous.  In addition, there are many different security products available, and they all have different means to characterize potentially dangerous downloads.

Protect Against Malware With Your Brain

brainEarlier this evening, I received an email from my sister. It was a forwarded email, with her words of “warning and caution” at the beginning. She went so far as to say something along the line of how everyone better be extra vigilant. She stated that people need to “be fearful” these days when it comes to malware.

The email detailed a supposedly horrible “new” piece of malware, which had been classified by Microsoft as the “worst ever”. I knew, before checking into it, that this was absolutely false. However, being the person that I am, I did my research. I did a “reply all” on the email and explained to everyone what my credentials are. I then gave them several REAL links that describe this virus in detail. The email discussed the “postcard virus”, which is actually quite old – and not as harmful as the email would have you believe.

One Million Xbox Live Users Banned

xbox360Microsoft is tired of piracy – and they’re doing something about it in a very big way. In a statement released by the company, they state: All consumers should know that piracy is illegal and that modifying their Xbox 360 console to play pirated discs violates the Xbox Live terms of use, will void their warranty, and result in a ban from Xbox Live..

Reactions around the globe are varied… and passionate on both sides of the coin. Teens who have had their accounts cut off are definitely not happy, even when they fully admit to being guilty of piracy and console modifications. One such banned player, who hails from the UK, told a radio station this morning that he is “gutted” and “distraught” by Microsoft’s decision. He was even noted to be seen crying loudly in public. However, this same person also admits to paying a local electronics shop more than $100.00 to mod his Xbox for him – so he can play pirated games.

Is the Triple Engine Browser Lunascape Right for You?

lunascapeMany people have never even heard of this browser, despite the massive amount of press it received late last year. I randomly asked about 200 people yesterday what their thoughts are on Lunascape 6.0 ORION – their newest beta version. There were only four people who replied that they have ever tried it, and only two of those who currently use it. Both of those people are, not surprisingly, developers.

Lunascape makes use of all three major web rendering engines: Gecko (Firefox), Trident (Internet Explorer) and WebKit (Safari and Chrome). People who use the browser can instantly switch between the three different engine modes by right-clicking a browser tab or by clicking on the engine switch button that you’ll find at the bottom-left of the screen.

iPhone or Droid – What is Your Phone of Choice?

androidUp until now, the iPhone has undeniably been the most sought-after phone on the market. It seems like nearly everyone has one these days. I get teased quite often by my boss and friends because I neither have – nor want – an iPhone. What the heck do I “need” one for? I’m happy with my normal run-of-the-mill cell phone. It calls people. It texts people. It even takes pictures and plays music! I work from home, and I don’t travel often. I don’t need a phone that does a million things other than what I already have… or do I?

Malwarebytes vs. IObit – Where Does the Truth Lie?

mbamEverywhere I turned online yesterday, there was conversation surrounding the Malwarebytes blog post, in which they have very publicly accused IObit of stealing their proprietary database(s). It’s being talked about in blogs, on forums, via newsletters and news sites, and within private mailing lists. People chatted about this on IRC, and fights were instigated on various forums as to the validity of the claim.

How Has Technology Changed Your Life?

lifeTechnology is something that many of us take for granted. Teenagers today look at us as though we are crazy when we reminisce about the days without Internet… without cell phones or even CD players. They cannot fathom what it was we could have possibly done for entertainment in the years we spent before game consoles were invented.
